Model Rocket Launches

FLARE Rocketry - Las Cruces, NM

October 3, 2020

Barry located a rocket launch club in New Mexico and we were excited to take our rockets and attend the FLARE rocket launch in Las Cruces. Masks and social distancing not optional! We brought the Ascender, the Majestic and the Cherokee E. We flew each of them twice. Here Barry is connecting the electrical leads to the Ascender.

Barry set up the GoPro Hero 8 Black edition at the base of the launchpad and aimed it up to capture the launch and flight of the Ascender on an E16-6 engine at 240 frames per second. We then slowed down the launch in Pinnacle Studio.

This is a different flight of the Ascender with an on-board 808 keychain camera.

The launch of the Cherokee E as viewed from the Go Pro Hero 8 Black at the base of the launch pad. It is launched on an E12-6 rocket engine. This was the first flight and the parachute didn't bring it down very quickly. Barry walked a long way for the recovery!

There are three slow motion launches on this video again edited in Pinnacle Studio. The first is the Cherokee E.

The launch of the Majestic on E16-6 with the on-board keychain camera. It really spins as it climbs! This is due to minor impefections in the alignment of the fins.

SOAR Rocketry - Alpharetta, GA

August 10, 2019

Another beautiful day at the rocket field. Barry loads the Majestic on the launch rod. Man is it big. He has been waiting and excited to launch this on an F engine since he got it for Father's Day!

Barry suggested his friend Scott bring his son to the field. His son 3-D printed a rocket for the occasion. Here they are prepping it for launch.

Barry at our table preparing the 2-stage Mongoose for launch. It was the first and last launch for this beautiful rocket as it landed across the river in the trees with no chance of recovery. When Barry told the rangemaster what engines he was using, the response was "You really don't want that rocket back, do you!"

Over the winter we built some new rockets and joined SOAR at the high power field in Ballground, GA.

SOAR Rocketry - Alpharetta, GA

August 11, 2018

We enjoyed the rocket launch so much last month, that we showed up for another one. Here we are at the SOAR field eagerly awaiting our chanch to launch our rockets!

We launched the xxx, a two stage rocket for the first time. Unfortunately, it was windy and it ended up in the trees. Here is Barry and another club member trying to recover it.

SOAR Rocketry - Alpharetta, GA

July 14, 2018

As we were cleaning out the basement in July 2018, we came across the bin of model rockets that were left over from when Kevin was a child. Barry commented that we should find a model rocket club and go shoot them off. He located SOAR (Southern Area Rocketry Association) and discovered their field was only about 20 minutes from our house! So we rejoined and headed off on a rainy Saturday morning for our first rocket launch in years. We had a great time.

Barry Preparing the Snitch for launch. It is Lori's favorite rocket because of its simplicity. No parachutes or streamers as it is a tumble rocket. It went on a C6-0 engine. To decode the engine rating the letter is the class of engine which is defined by the impulse in Newton-seconds. The first number is the average thrust in Newtons and the second is the delay (seconds) before the ejection charge.

Barry putting the final touches on the Chrome Dome, so named for the golden nose cone. The shock cord on this guy failed but we recovered the rocket with no damage. It went on a B6-4 engine.

Here is a video clip of all of the launches we made that day. All of our rockets were on B6-4 engines except the Snitch. The video was made with a Casio Exilim Camera which has a high speed mode (240 frames per second).
